Why do we use technology?
A 5th
grade class draws answers.
From the "seed" of a general reason to use
technology, for example Organization, they brainstormed "trees" of ever more specific reasons. With
names removed, their diagrams are linked to the right. Click on them to see full size

We
started with 12 root reasons for using technology: Food, Shelter, Communication,
Transportation, Commerce, Art, Religion, Health, Entertainment, Organization,
Conflict, and Exploration. In teams of about four students, they came to
consensus on which root reason they would expand. First come, first served
with no two teams using the same reason, so they were motivated to achieve
consensus quickly.
